An ABS Regime for Non-Commercial Biodiversity Research: Roundtable Discussion on Sharing the Benefits of Research

Organizer
Consortium for the Barcode of Life

Date and Time
26 May 2008 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9)

The Consortium for the Barcode of Life is one of many international initiatives devoted to basic, non-commercial research on biodiversity. The Bonn Guidelines do not differentiate between commercial and non-commercial research, even though the risks and benefits are very different for developing countries with high biodiversity. This roundtable discussion will include representatives of research initiatives and developing countries. Their brief presentations will focus on an International Regime for Access and Benefit Sharing that is devoted strictly to non-commercial research.
