The side event will focus on the critical role of local governments in the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Developments at the local level will be presented, such as results of the Curitiba Declaration on Cities and Biodiversity adopted in March 2007 in Brazil, and the "Local Action for Biodiversity" (LAB) programme started jointly bu ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability and IUCN (Countdown 2010) in 2006.
