In light of the current trends of reduction in the world’s diversity, there is need to strengthen the existing and explore innovative directions in relation to conservation, enhancement and sustainable and equitable use of diversity, including integrated approaches to address its biological and cultural components. Because of their respective mandates, the CBD Secretariat and UNESCO’s Conventions and Programmes dealing with both biological and cultural diversity are in a unique position to mainstream the links between biological and cultural diversity in research, political dialogue and action from local to international levels. The Side event will present different areas of interconnections between biological and cultural diversity and the envisaged Joint Programme of Work between UNESCO and the SCBD on this theme.
