Meeting
Ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 9)

During the side-event, the European Forest Institute will present the results of an assessment of the impacts of biodiversity protection on the availability of wood for the industry. Protecting biological and landscape diversity has resulted in various protection regimes in Europe. At the same time discussions are focusing on availability and mobilisation of wood as policies are promoting the use of energy from renewable sources and demand from the wood markets is increasing. This study by EFI provides an estimate on the felling restrictions and their impact on the industry in terms of volumes that are no longer available. The European Pulp and Paper industry will present its approach to support forest biodiversity protection and its commitment to sustainability. Speakers from the Industry will inform participants on best practices in the European paper industry wood procurement to enhance biodiversity. They will demonstrate the influence of the industry on biodiversity protection though the wood procurement chain. The industry intends to publicise these best practices on biodiversity to give guidance and to widely spread them among the European Pulp and Paper Industry to enhance forest biodiversity in Europe. The publication is planned for autumn 2008.
