Applying traditional knowledge and practices to sustainable forest management and recovery of species at risk. The event will showcase 2 Canadian examples of how Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge and customary practices are contributing to conservation planning and sustainable resource management. Plenty Canada, an Aboriginal environmental non-governmental organization, will share its experience with the successful application of traditional and community knowledge in both national and provincial species management and recovery planning processes with a focus on the American Eel and Lake Sturgeon. Valérie Courteois, a member of the Innu community of Mashteuiatsh will describe her work as the forestry advisor for the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Sustainable Development Institute and as the forestry planner for the Innu Nation including the Innu Nation ecosystems-based forest management plans and Forest Guardians program.
