Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Achieving a viable balance between human use of marine living resources and conservation of marine biodiversity and habitats is essential to secure long-term ecosystem service delivery, including healthy and productive fish populations. This side event will present a report prepared by FAO,UNEP and CBD Secretariat in collaboration with IUCN-FEG reviewing and synthesizing current knowledge and possible ways forward to address impacts of Destructive Fishing Practices, Unsustainable Fishing, and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing on Marine Biodiversity and Habitats. Key findings and conclusions will be presented together with elements of policy and management aiming at the mitigation and reduction of the impacts of destructive fisheries on biodiversity and habitats. Recent activities, instruments and tools to reduce fisheries impacts on biodiversity, including work on deep-sea fisheries, bycatch reduction, the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, as well as Ecosystem Approaches to marine management will be discussed.
