Side Event
Carbon, biodiversity and ecosystem services: exploring co-benefits
Organizer
German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation
Date and Time
20 October 2010 13:15 - 14:45
Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)
Climate change mitigation measures can potentially deliver co-benefits, such as biodiversity conservation and the maintenance of ecosystem services in addition to emissions reductions. Jointly organised by BfN and UNEP-WCMC, this side-event will present planning tools collaboratively developed with countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to help implement climate change mitigation measures that secure co-benefits. The role of protected areas in maintaining carbon and co-benefits is highlighted, as is the importance of some areas outside protected areas for carbon storage, biodiversity and/or ecosystem services. The results of applying these tools can be used to discuss potential biodiversity impacts of ecosystem management for carbon and can provide a basis for identifying options to better align the objectives of the CBD and those of the UNFCCC.
