As artificial life forms are being created in laboratories for various industrial uses, unsubstantiated claims that these new technologies allow for greater sustainability mask fundamental gaps in global regulation as well as serious threats to bio-diversity and human health and livelihoods. This side event will present key issues and considerations in assessing the environmental and social risks of new technologies involved in the next genereation of biofuels and and their uses for other industrial purposes.
