Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Global climate change is predicted to have profound effects upon ecological systems and human society. The conservation of biodiversity and its sustainable use are also challenges of great importance for mankind as means of addressing global climate change. To slow down global climate change and stabilize the climate, it is necessary to conserve and restore forests, wetlands, and soil which are vast reservoirs for carbon as well as to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases derived from fossil fuels. Furthermore, consideration for biodiversity conservation is indispensable for the planning and implementation of measures to adapt to changing climate and its influences. Planning and implementation of measures against global climate change should not contradict those for biodiversity conservation, and the result of these measures should be beneficial for both climate change amelioration and biodiversity conservation. Keeping these problems in mind, the two hundred participants in this symposium including public, environmental NGO and NPO members, experts, people from industry, and government officials with various points of view, engaged in knowledge exchanges and discussions. As a result, we, the participants in this discussion, make the proposals to international society, based on the information and views we have shared here.
