The Status of CBD Implementations and Development of ABS Regional Framework in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) Region

During the side event, ICIMOD aims to invite a high level delegation from its eight regional member countries namely, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region. ICIMOD plans to make two introductory presentations on (1) the analyses of the CBD implementation by HKH countries, and (2) draft access and benefit sharing regional framework for the HKH countries. The draft papers will be shared with the HKH countries in advance. ICIMOD presentations will be followed by a panel discussion by the high level delegation from the HKH countries. The purpose of the side event is to: a) raise awareness among the regional and international community about the implementation status of CBD in HKH region keeping in view 2010 targets and how the HKH country governments are confronting with challenges; b) share and discuss on the draft regional framework on access and benefit sharing (ABS) from genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge of the HKH region. The side event is aimed at preparing the mountain specific inputs on CBD implementation and ABS to the SBSTTA-14 and COP-10 process. The SBSSTA will be a good opportunity for the HKH countries to discuss on the draft ABS framework and draw a road map by the HKH countries in further developing, accepting and implementing it.
