This side event will present IUCN work on 'Protected Areas and the Law' since COP 9, in particular the Guidelines on Protected Areas Legislation, developed to provide information and guidance on key elements of a modern and effective legal framework, attuned to the present roles and corresponding diversification of protected ares, as well as to the emergence of new scientific understanding about protected areas management and new governance aproaches. The Guidelines, illustrated by 15 case studies, are the result of cooperation between the IUCN Environmental Law Centre, the Protected Areas Programme, and experts from three IUCN Commissions: CEL, WCPA and CEESP.
