From the rise of Synthetic Biology and new nanotechnologies to the introduction of climate-ready crops and next generation biofuels, for SBSTTA to fulfill its mandate requires a capacity for continual monitoring, reflection and foresight with regard to new technologies. In its latest foresight report UNEP argues that society has the option of going beyond a reactive stance towards new technologies , and working towards a more comprehensive and anticipatory management approach by which the implications of novel technologies and chemicals are systematically and comprehensively assessed before they reach the production phase to minimize or avoid risks to society and nature. Come hear what precautionary governance and a technology assessment mechanism could mean for biodiversity and the work of SBSTTA and the work underway to build such a mechanism.
