Genetically Engineered Fish and Biodiversity: Risk Assessment Considerations

Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, Center for Food Safety U.S., EcoNexus, Friends of the Earth U.S.

Date and Time
1 May 2012 18:15 - 19:45

Sixteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

Eggs from genetically modified Atlantic salmon have already been transported from Canada to Panama for the purposes of research and development. These same GM salmon eggs could soon be approved for commercial production in Canada and shipped for grow-out in Panama. How far should national governments limit or expand their assessment of global biosafety risk? Panelists will discuss the potential risks of GM fish in the context of rapid expansion of fish farming globally and discuss steps the CBD may consider in order to protect marine biodiversity.
