The People’s Convention: A panel discussion on the legal status and implementation of the CBD from 1992-2020

Organizer
Natural Justice: Lawyers for Communities and the Environment; CBD Alliance; Global Forest Coalition

Date and Time
8 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

An assessment of the CBD conducted by the CBD Alliance highlights significant gaps in implementation of the Convention itself as well as of the many COP decisions and instruments adopted since 1992. It also raises concerns over the undermining of the legally binding nature of the CBD, which translates into further complications at the national level when Parties strive to enact their commitments. This side event will consist of an engaging panel discussion with representatives from the CBD Secretariat, governments, civil society, and Indigenous peoples, who will openly deliberate the legally binding nature of the CBD, and implementation, monitoring and compliance of the CBD since 1992.
