Organizer
International Institute for Environment and Development, and Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity

Date and Time
11 October 2012 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The Nagoya Protocol requires countries to support the development of community protocols for ABS by indigenous and local communities. This event will launch a new IIED publication: Biodiversity and culture: Exploring community protocols, rights and consent, published in association with Natural Justice, Union for Ethical Biotrade, COMPAS and Kalpavriksh India. The publication reviews 14 cases of community protocols and FPIC in Asia, Latin America and Africa. The overall lessons on these tools and how to support them in practice will be presented, along with 3 case studies (eg. BCPs of pastoralists in India, Quechua farmers in Peru, and Ethical Biotrade). Invited panelists (eg. from the CBD Secretariat, and Indian and African NGOs) will identify the challenges ahead for BCPs and PIC and related participatory processes.
