Date and Time
15 October 2012 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

Addressing the underlying causes of biodiversity loss by mainstreaming biodiversity across government and society is a critical means of achieving the Aichi Targets. COP 11 presents a valuable milestone for the biodiversity community to take stock of the effectiveness of mainstreaming as a key strategy towards achieving these targets. Since the GEF STAP meeting in South Africa in 2004 catalysed mainstreaming as a strategic objective for the GEF, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), together with the UNDP, has lead the development of knowledge and practice in mainstreaming biodiversity into the policies, operations and practices of major production sectors. Using a panel discussion format, this side-event will showcase learning from leading GEF-supported initiatives that have piloted innovative mechanisms, tools, approaches and partnerships in mainstreaming; it will explore what works and why; and what is required to take projects to scale. The aim of the event is to inspire people through mainstreaming approaches that have worked well around the world; to explore successes and examples; to promote south-south knowledge transfer; and to energise people about the possibilities and opportunities of how we take our experiences to scale. This should be a lively debate around mainstreaming as an effective tool for halting biodiversity loss and at the same time influencing development trajectories
