IPBES capacity building initiatives and networks – how could they also support implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity?

Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme – World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC)

Date and Time
9 October 2012 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was formally established in Panama on 21 April 2012. Capacity building is a key component of IPBES. The upcoming first Plenary Meeting of IPBES which takes place early in 2013 will consider the Platform’s first work programme, including the capacity building function. The side event will present some of the IPBES-related capacity building initiatives undertaken by the three co-organizers (please see under “Additional information”). After the introductory part the co-organizers will invite a sharing of views on how capacity building activities under IPBES may also support national implementation of, e.g. the strategic plan of the CBD. How well do the outlined activities under IPBES match the needs under the CBD? Which aspects of capacity building under IPBES, e.g. regional cooperation, would be most beneficial for CBD Parties’ needs?
