Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

In Article 8(j), the CBD mandates parties to respect, preserve and protect the traditional knowledge, practices and innovations of Indigenous and Local Communities (ILCs). Local Communities have always been key actors in the CBD. Throughout the years, the CBD has adopted mechanisms for enhancing the participation of ILCs, including the setting up of a voluntary fund for the participation of ILCs and the adoption of a decision that requires parties to designate a Focal Point for Article 8(j). In the same vein, the CBD parties in their bid to increase the participation of Local Communities have adopted a number of decisions specific to their concerns. The side event is intended to allow stakeholders to: • Discuss the various COP decisions (previous and current that is draft decisions ) on Local Communities; • Share the output of the Expert Group on Local communities. • Discuss the results of the Expert Group meeting on Article 10(c). • Share ideas on the organization & operation of the International Local Community Forum on Biodiversity (ILCFB).
