Date and Time
15 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The improved maintenance and use of agricultural biodiversity is central to improving the sustainability of agricultural production systems. This side event, jointly hosted by the UNEP and FAO will present the experiences from a variety of countries which have undertaken GEF supported projects (implemented by UNEP and FAO) on different aspects of conservation and use of agricultural biodiversity. The work described will include not only efforts to maintain diversity of crops, useful trees and livestock, but also experiences on the maintenance of other ecosystem service providers such as pollinators. Discussion points will include maximizing the contribution of such projects to improving sustainability in agricultural production systems around the world, the contribution that the work can make to the relevant Aichi Biodiversity Targets such as Target 7: (By 2020 areas under agriculture, aquaculture and forestry are managed sustainably, ensuring conservation of biodiversity. (http://www.cbd.int/sp/targets/)) and issues of resource mobilization for future work.
