Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

Element 2 of the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) on Governance, Participation, Equity and Benefit Sharing was identified in decision X/31 as an issue in need of greater attention. The Executive Secretary , the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and other relevant organizations were requested to provide additional technical support through the development of toolkits, best practices, and guidelines. Parties were requested to conduct assessments of governance of protected areas based on this guidance. Accordingly, a resource kit on “Governance of Protected Areas - from understanding to action” has been developed by several partners including GIZ, the IUCN Global Protected Areas Programme, the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and the ICCA Consortium, in collaboration with the CBD Secretariat. At this side event, the partners will introduce this product and its possible applications. All actors concerned with protected area governance are warmly invited, including governments, indigenous peoples and local communities and civil society. The final product will be available in 2013.
