Organizer
TERRE POLICY CENTRE

Date and Time
19 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

Over last 40 Years, since the adoption of UNESCO's Convention of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, 962 properties have been inscribed as the World Heritage of which 188 are inscribed as Would Natural Heritage. First ever serial nomination of 39 sites in India in the the Western Ghats - considered as the hottest of the hot spots- were inscribed in 36th Session of Word Heritage Committee in July 2012. Though the natural heritage sites or only about 20% of total heritage sites , they have powerful potential to effectively spread the message and implement the concept of ‘living with nature’. Such World Natural Heritage sites are equally important tools for the sustainable development the local communities. The local communities around such sites could play increasingly important role in preserving, nurturing and leveraging such inscription for setting up the development agenda and implementing grass-root sustainability. How can world natural heritage be leveraged in sustainable development of the local communities? What dose such transformation mean in the light of changing social, economic and environmental contacts? Are there examples of World Heritage which attempted the sustainable communities? The side event to be jointly hosted by Terre Policy Center, and UNESCO ( tbc) is proposed in partnership with WII( Wild-Life Institute tbc) ) and others to present core concept and present the case-studies to illustrate the vital link between natural heritage and sustainable developments.Contact : Rajendra Shende, Chairman TERRE Policy Centre.
