REDD+ AND NBSAP PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION – SYNERGIES CAN CONTRIBUTE TO MEETING THE AICHI TARGETS

Organizer
United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre

Date and Time
16 October 2013 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Seventeenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

Any of the five forest-based climate change mitigation activities included in REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) can potentially contribute towards the implementation of the CBD Strategic Plan and to each of Aichi Biodiversity Targets, as recognised by the Parties to the CBD in Decision XI/19. In this side event UNEP-WCMC will release the UN-REDD Programme Policy Brief ‘REDD+ and the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets’, which examines the potential synergies between the two and explores how both planning for REDD+ and revision and implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) can complement and enhance one another. This will be followed by a discussion of in-country experience of work that illustrates the potential for mutual support between REDD+ and NBSAP processes.
