The Side Event will present several products obtained on ABS matters in the LAC Region including: - Legislation: challenges for the future implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in the Region - Case Studies: experiences from the LAC Region (including research, capacity building, non-commercial benefits) - Key Articles from the Nagoya Protocol It expects also to bring attention for the ratification of the Nagoya Protocol in the LAC countries. The IUCN-UNEP/GEF Project “Strengthening the Implementation of Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing regimes in Latin America and the Caribbean” aims to uphold the principles of conservation, sustainability, equity and justice of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) with regard to access and benefit sharing (ABS) and the protection of traditional knowledge. The overall objective is to strengthen the capacities of eight countries (Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama and Peru) to develop and/or comply with national policy and legal frameworks related to ABS.
