The Human Dimensions of Biodiversity Conservation - Aligning the conservation agenda with the social sciences to achieve the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Targets

Organizer
IUCN Commission on Education and Communication

Date and Time
17 June 2014 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Fifth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation of the Convention

The objectives of this side event are to bring attention to the human and social dimension of biodiversity conservation, with a specific focus on exploring mechanism for promoting pro-biodiversity conservation behaviors at the human-biodiversity interphase; and, to start a dialogue with the conservation community and more specifically, experts and representatives of parties to the CBD on these matters. The side event, which is part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Commission on Education and Communication’s (IUCN CEC) continuous efforts to support Aichi Target 1, will act as a follow-up to a Deep Dive ‘Thought Leaders’ meeting held on November 22-23, 2013 in Rolle, Switzerland when IUCN, its Commissions and social science experts convened to brainstorm the role of behavioural and social sciences in Achieving the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Targets. Among other outcomes, this Deep Dive 'Thought Leaders' meeting highlighted that although the biophysical sciences are important in communicating conservation, the social sciences offer important lessons that scientists can consider to actively encourage positive behaviour change at the human-biodiversity levels. The idea of aligning the conservation agenda with the social sciences by asking two fundamental questions, posed by Prof. Stanley Asah – “What motivates and constrains human action, and, how can these motivations be enhanced and constraints removed” to promote positive conservation behavior at the human-biodiversity interphase? – was introduced at the Trondheim Conference in Norway, 27-31 May 2013, amongst stakeholders on key issues relating to the implementation of the CBD under the theme “Ecology and Economy for A Sustainable Society”.
