Date and Time
26 June 2014 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eighteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice

Since the early 1980s the Bern Convention – Europe’s treaty on nature conservation - has been encouraging its Contracting Parties (51 nowadays) to prohibit the introduction of non-native species into the natural environment, to take preventive measures against accidental introductions, and to take remedial and mitigation measures where applicable. The Side event will present, through practical examples, the main achievements of the Bern Convention’s Group of Experts on Invasive Alien Species which, since its setting-up in 1992, has produced fifteen recommendations, a European Strategy on IAS, several Codes of conduct and Guidelines, and a very high number of technical reports. More concretely, the delegates will receive updates on the most recent work aimed to the identification and prioritisation of Pathways, as well as to the setting-up of early warning and information systems. The event will further provide the participants with the concrete experience of some Parties in using the Bern Convention’s tools, namely the voluntary instruments such as the Codes of conduct. A more in depth presentation will concern the European Code of conduct on Pets and Invasive Alien Species, adopted by the Parties to the Bern Convention in 2011.
