Managing ex situ collections of microbial strains across the world has been hampered by the lack of an overarching tracking system. The coming into force of the Nagoya Protocol (NP) requires improved clarity on what strains are held where, how they can be accessed, and the conditions under which they may be used. The World Federation of Culture Collections’ (WDCM) unique Global Catalogue of Microorganisms (GCM) supports this process. It provides concrete, scientific, economic and intellectual property certainty for users through its use of unique identifiers and an almost exhaustive database holding all key information relating to each organism and strain. Linking legal provenance of microorganisms through the ABS Clearing House Mechanism and GCM assists culture collections, academic users, industry and business investors to access and utilize microbiological resources within the benefit sharing framework of the CBD’S Nagoya Protocol. The WDCM takes pleasure in showcasing the work the GCM and related WDCM activities at this side the side-event.
