Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

Mexico´s Natural Protected Areas (NPA) provide ecosystem services necessary to human wellness and key economic activities. However, multiple anthropic pressures and limited infrastructure, financial and human resources compromise their effective management and the provision of ecosystem services in the long term. As a complementary tool for addressing these issues, the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) is in the process of internalizing the ecosystem services valuation approach in order to incorporate the economic scope into decision making. CONANP, with the technical assistance of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is developing the EcoValores México initiative, whose main objective is to strengthen CONANP´s positioning through different activities related with valuing ecosystem services in NPA. By characterizing and valuing (in monetary and non-monetary terms) ecosystem services, CONANP seeks, among other objectives, to distribute in a more equitable way the costs and benefits of nature conservation, justify the creation of new protected areas, secure financial stability, change the conservation language to inform stakeholders outside the environmental sector, and demonstrate the importance of protected areas in sustaining economic growth and human welfare. This side event will present the progress in the implementation of the initiative and, moreover, will draw attention on how the ecosystem valuation approach can be applied in practice, and how it is permeating in CONANP´s programs and strategies. It will also describe the way CONANP is intending to influence high level decision making within key economic sectors, both in the private and public sectors.
