Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

The ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHPs) are protected areas in Southeast Asia which are known for their unique biodiversity and ecosystems, wilderness and outstanding values. The establishment of the AHPs stresses that the ASEAN nations share a common natural heritage and should collaborate in efforts to protect the rich biodiversity that supports the lives of millions of people in Southeast Asia. At present, a total of 33 protected areas have been declared as AHPs. The AHP Programme is a flagship programme of the ASEAN created to provide a platform for the management of the AHP sites. Over the years, The ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) serving as the Secretariat of the AHP Programme, has built a platform and a network among park managers and stakeholders to effectively manage these ecologically representative ecosystems in Southeast Asia and contribute to the Aichi Targets 11 and the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA). The side event will highlight the importance of regional cooperation for effective management of protected areas through regional, national and site level coordination and networking and through supporting site-based initiatives to maintain essential ecosystems services through sustainable livelihoods and local community-based management (Target 14). The side event will focus discussions on the following: (1) Effective area-based conservation measures (with examples in ASEAN on collaborative management; participatory approaches and development of ecotourism and agro-based production; and community-based ecotourism); (2) Management planning and adaptation to climate change impacts in marine protected areas; (3) Policy and capacity issues affecting the effective management of AHPs and other protected areas in ASEAN; (4) AHP Regional Action Plan and regional partnerships.
