Amazon Protected Areas Program (ARPA): past 10 years, future 25 years – financially sound and sustainable Protected Areas for the Biome on a continent wide scale

Organizer
Ministry of the Environment of Brazil - MMA / Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade – FUNBIO / World Wildlife Fund network - WWF

Date and Time
16 October 2014 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

The event intends to address the accomplishments after 10 years of implementation of the ARPA Program and its future: the 25 year strategy for achieving financial sustainability and sound management of Protected Areas. This is a follow-up side event on the launching of the ARPA for Life initiative on COP-11, now intending to attract other Biome harboring countries like Colombia and Peru, that face similar challenges for creating system wide long-term sustainability for the Biome. The recent joint partners efforts to create the new financing strategy for ARPA managed to leverage USD 250 million donations to a Transition Fund that will maintain PA management and guarantee an easy transition for its financing from donor to government arranged and deployed funds. The Ministry counts with the support of FUNBIO and WWF network for the organization of the side-event – with the intention of having the Minister herself chairing it, accompanied by Ministers/Secretariats from Colombia and Peru.
