Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

Non-commercial research focused on improving our understanding of natural systems, is crucially important to underpin the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity. This is especially true for the, as yet, largely unexplored marine environment. In relation to Article 8a of the Nagoya Protocol, University of Bremen and two international collaborative marine scientific research projects - MicroB3 and PharmaSea - represented by IUCN and eCOAST respectively, will present measures and recommendations to promote and encourage non-commercial research highlighting some of the challenges to be addressed by both users and providers in this context. These include: • The mutual benefits for users and providers of non-commercial scientific research, taking into account the concerns of provider countries vis-a-vis access for non-commercial use. • The crossroads of open access to data with ABS, focusing on measures developed by the MicroB3 consortium to share marine metagenomic information via easily accessible open-source and open-access databases. • The concerns of the European marine research sector in light of forthcoming ABS regulations, considering also that non-commercial research often provides the first point of entry of potentially valuable and unique marine biodiversity into the value chain. • Options / recommendations for amicable implementation of Art. 8a: How can freedom of non-commercial research be reflected as a concern in ABS agreements and legislations?
