Ninth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity

This event aims to discuss new research findings on actual and potential interactions between the CBD and international human rights law on fair and equitable benefit-sharing of relevance to indigenous peoples and local communities. It will focus on: 1) benefit-sharing from the sustainable use of natural resources (not only genetic resources, but also extractives, tourism and conservation); 2) benefit-sharing from the use of traditional knowledge in relation to climate change; and 3) legal challenges arising from case studies in South Africa (traditional healers), Namibia (traditional management of protected areas), Argentina (mining in indigenous lands), Malaysia (agricultural development in indigenous land) and Greece (traditional pastoralism). The views exchanged at the event will inform further research on these topics under the project BENELEX (""Benefit-sharing for an equitable transition to the green economy - the role of law"), that continues until late 2018: www.benelex.ed.ac.uk.
