The fourth Global Biodiversity Outlook has reported the quantitative elements of Target 11 (to protect 17% of terrestrial and 10% of coastal and marine areas) are on track to be achieved at the global level by 2020, with only an additional area of 1.6% needed in each case. However, the other elements relating to ecological representation, coverage of areas important for biodiversity, management effectiveness, governance, and integration of protected areas into wider land- and seascapes, still need more attention in order to be achieved. Accordingly, the Convention has organized an event to demonstrate a roadmap for achievement of Target 11, including its current status, quantitative information that can be used for planning and the outputs of the current series of workshops.
