This is the first in a two-part side event that will profile technical and scientific cooperation (TSC) initiatives under the Convention that support Parties in achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Part one explores three broad umbrella initiatives. The second part of the side event will be held the following day in the same room. The first of the initiatives profiled on this first day is the BioBridge Initiative supported by MOE of ROK and currently under development at SCBD Secretariat that aims to 1) facilitate the communication of TSC needs and priorities of Parties, 2) further enhance the availability and accessibility of best practices on TSC, 3) facilitating the linking of the needs of Parties with support for TSC by relevant global, regional and national organizations and initiatives, 4) promote thematic, cross-cutting and regional pilot programmes for TSC and technology transfer, 5) report on progress to SBI. The second initiative is the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net), a UNDP initiative that aims to 1) develop capacity to support IPBES, 2) help enable effective management of biodiversity and ecosystems worldwide and 3) implement the three Rio Conventions and related multilateral agreements in a way that contributes to long-term human well-being and sustainable development. The third initiative is the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) developed through the UNFCCC to 1) provide technical assistance at the request of developing countries to accelerate the transfer of climate technologies, 2) create access to information and knowledge on climate technologies, 3) foster collaboration among climate technology stakeholders via the Centre’s network of regional and sectoral experts from academia, the private sector, and public and research institutions. The side event will present each of these initiatives and explore synergies and alignment followed by a question and answer session.
