ISSUE BASED MODULES FOR THE COHERENT IMPLEMENTATION OF BIODIVERSITY RELATED CONVENTIONS

Organizer
United Nations Environment Programme

Date and Time
7 September 2005 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on the Review of Implementation of the Convention (WGRI 1)

The 2010 biodiversity target makes efforts on synergy and harmonization among biodiversity related agreements important and urgent. Since different MEAs often relate to common issues, UNEP is developing issue-based modules on four crosscutting issues: Inland Water, Sustainable Use, Invasive Alien Species and Climate Change. The modules aim to facilitate the work of biodiversity experts at national and international level by giving an overview of how a certain issue is treated throughout several agreements. It will do this by analyzing existing decisions and commitments of different agreements concerning that issue. By adding in regional commitments, the modules will also improve coherence across different levels. It is important to involve the MEA experts in reviewing the modules to ensure the quality of the final product. The side-event will therefore present the first drafts of those issue-based modules to the CBD delegates and ask for their comments on both structure and content.
