Organizer
Brazilian Society of Zoology, Ministry of Science and Technology

Date and Time
21 March 2006 13:15 - 15:0

Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

This event resulted from a project carried out by the Brazilian Societies of Zoology (SBZ), Botany (SBB), and Microbiology (SBM) and the Reference Center on Environmental Information (CRIA) for the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) in collaboration with the Centre for Strategic Management and Studies in Science, Technology and Innovation (CGEE). It has the approval of the National Commission of Biodiversity (CONABIO, Ministry of Environment). Approximately 70 Brazilian researchers were responsible for producing documents containing the state of art of biological collections and for proposing strategies to help solve the taxonomic impediment in Brazil (http://www.cria.org.br/cgee/col/documentos). The main objectives of the event are: 1. to discuss Brazil’s participation in GTI and in initiatives such as GBIF and the Catalogue of Life (Species2000/ITIS) with representatives from the scientific community and the Brazilian government and 2. to initiate a coordinated process of data repatriation, inviting biological collections from around the world that have important holdings from Brazil to help in the definition of a strategy. During the 11th SBSTTA representatives of these initiatives were contacted, including Dr. Christopher Hauser who confirmed his participation and stressed the importance of the present event. We would like to emphasize the importance of this side-event occur on the second day of the COP8 since it can be one of the start points for productive discussions and negotiations among countries during the event.
