A presentation of a new approach - a strategic collaboration among five countries in Latin America - to develop country capacity to address environmental and feed/food safety and socio-economic impact assessment of transgenic crops. The proposal and structure of the project (until in the pre-approval phase) will be presented. It is expected that this project strengthens biosafety capacity in the region to make informed decisions as to the benefits and risks of adopting transgenic crops and will assist these countries in determining where, when and how these crops and their food and feed products may best be utilized to contribute to the national development priorities, while ensuring compliance with the Cartagena Protocol on biosafety.
