The side event will provide an up to date overview of trends in the study and use of genetic resources in the deep seabed and Antarctica. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss how relevant provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity may contribute to ensure that these resources are conserved and used sustainably and equitably, as well as suggest synergistic arrangements between the CBD and sister agreements in dealing with these resources. Finally, the side event will foster communication between different stakeholders involved in this issue, by identifying measures to reduce conflicts and ensure that their expectations are met on a common ground.
