Meeting
Eighth Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8)

In 2004, the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA) and the Territorial Development Secretariat (SDT) had signed a cooperation agreement with Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity. The main purpose of this agreement is to promote and support the preservation and valuation of traditional foods, typical of the territories where the family agriculturists and traditional populations are mostly concentrated. Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity was created in 2003 in Italy, as an independent non-profit entity. Its main goal is to organize and support projects in the field of ecogastronomy, in order to safeguard the biodiversity on agriculture and the gastronomic traditions and resources. Conserving biodiversity means not only improving quality of life, but actually saving lives, communities and cultures. Slow Food became an active voice on agriculture and ecology, conjugating pleasure and food with consciousness and responsibility. The Ark of Taste, Presidium and Food Communities are Slow Food programs on ecogastronomy to safeguard and value excellent products, which are threatened with either real or potential extinction. Nowadays, there are 5 Presidia, a dozen products in the Ark of Taste, and several Food Communities in Brazil. This event will discuss the scope of the projects that have been developed in Brazil.
