At its sixth meeting, in 2002, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity recognized that the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture will have an important role for the conservation and sustainable utilization of agricultural biological diversity, for facilitating access to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and for the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their utilization.
