Consider temporal and spatial dynamics
One key component that is missing from the Azores criteria is the consideration of spatial and temporal dynamics of the marine environment. The link here is the requirement for adequate and viable sites: "should have size and protection sufficient to ensure ecological viability and integrity of the feature(s) for which they were selected". Some identified features can and should be dynamic, and their viability will depend on understanding of those dynamics and the design of appropriate static and dynamic MPAs. We (Bob Pressey, myself and others) are working on approaches for incorporating such dynamics into conservation design, and would be delighted to have further conservations about this.
