As you will recall, in Notification 2020-050 issued on 14 July 2020, the Secretariat announced that a series of special virtual sessions of SBSTTA and SBI will be scheduled for 15-18 September 2020, with a view to maintaining momentum ahead of the UN Biodiversity Summit and towards COP 15 and to facilitating preparations for the twenty-fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 24) and the third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 3), which are scheduled for 2-7 November and 9-14 November, respectively.
- I am therefore pleased to provide further information on the special virtual sessions. The sessions will include: (i) the launch of the fifth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook; (ii) the testing of a Party‑led review process, through an open-ended forum; (iii) a report of the panel on resource mobilization; and (iv) an update on the draft post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
- The sessions will be held on each of the four days from 7:00 am to 9:00 am, Montreal Time, and will provide opportunities for the presentation of information and for statements by Parties and observers. No decisions or formal recommendations will be made at the special sessions. Interpretation will be provided in all UN languages.
- Further information, including the programme, will be available at the webpage of these special virtual sessions, which is accessible at: https://www.cbd.int/conferences/sbstta24-sbi3-prep. The Secretariat will be updating this webpage as new information becomes available, including the meeting platform and connection details for each session, and other background documentation.
As per the practice for meetings of the subsidiary bodies, the designation of representatives to participate in the above sessions should be addressed to the CBD Executive Secretary through an official letter of nomination. The letter should clearly indicate which session or sessions they wish to take part in. Please send the nomination letter by e-mail to email@example.com or by fax at +1 514-288-6588, as soon as possible but no later than 11 September 2020. Early registration is encouraged.
I look forward to your active participation in these important sessions.
Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
Elizabeth Maruma Mrema
