COP 10 and protected areas

[#976]
COP 10 in Nagoya has wrapped up, the last piece of origami has been swept away, and we would like to update you on the results.

Within the strategic plan of the Convention, Target 11 pertains to protected areas, it reads:

Target 11: By 2020, at least 17 per cent of terrestrial and inland water, and 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, especially areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services, are conserved through effectively and equitably managed, ecologically representative and well connected systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, and integrated into the wider landscape and seascapes.

The advance unedited version of the decision on protected areas can be found at
http://www.cbd.int/cop/cop-10/doc/advance-final-unedited-texts/advance-unedited-version-protected-areas-en.doc

The Secretariat stands ready to continue its support to Parties in their implementation of these and other decisions in order to enhance implementation of the PoWPA.

all the best from your team in Montreal at the Secretariat!
