In Africa, efforts to create, manage and enhance protected areas date back to the end of the 19th century. However, in most cases, management approaches have not kept pace with global changes and the emergence of international directions dictated by the emergence of new environmental and socio-economic challenges.

Particular attention will be given to exchange on work with regards to protected areas in Africa while debating the ecological, economic and social legitimacy of these areas with partners working in the field at international and national levels. It aims to feed the debate on the post-2020 agenda in relation to protected areas and to take stock of protected area management approaches in Africa and propose orientations to improve their management and governance in a context characterized by increasingly pressing environmental and social challenges.

The specific objectives are broken down as follows:

  • Sharing experiences and lessons in relation to the types of governance and management of protected areas;
  • Identification of ways to improve the resilience and effectiveness of protected areas in the face of climate change; degradation, loss and depletion of natural resources; and the increase of poverty, the persistence of civil conflicts and the amplification of mobility;
  • Discussion of solutions for synergy between the protection of outstanding biodiversity and the contribution of protected areas to local and national development; in other words, how to make protected areas planning tools and what visions for which territorial projects; which models (see nature sanctuaries for indigenous and community heritage areas - APAC),
  • Decide on Africa's ability to achieve Aichi Target 11 and the SDGs;
  • Feed post-2020 guidance for Africa on PAs.

In addition to the specific themes mentioned above, which will be addressed by the programmed presentations, a panel of experts will discuss the following aspects:

  • The place of PAs in the SDGs,
  • The place of PAs in the African Union Agenda 2063 and in the 5 priorities of the African Development Bank (Enlighten and provide energy to Africa, Feed Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa and improving the quality of life).
  • The role of PAs in combating desertification, mitigation and adaptation to climate change,
  • The adaptation of socio-ecosystems to global changes and the integration of monitoring and early warning systems in the management of protected areas in Africa,
  • Monitoring and evaluation of natural resources, ecosystems and the impact on local development.
  • What post 2020 objectives for PA?
