Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing
Aichi Biodiversity Targets

The Competent National Authorities (CNAs) for the Nagoya Protocol play a critical role in the implementation of the Protocol. CNAs are responsible for granting access and advising on applicable ABS procedures and requirements.  Furthermore, CNAs may also be mandated to serve as checkpoints monitoring the utilization of genetic resources.  Within this context, collaboration between CNAs can take place at different levels and for different purposes. E.g. bilateral collaboration may be triggered through checkpoint communiqués and be necessary to ensure compliance with the Protocol; collaboration at the regional level may promote harmonization of ABS frameworks and be a means to avoid jurisdiction shopping; collaboration at the international level is again critical to ensure better understanding of different ABS systems and manage expectations.

This side event will bring together Nagoya Protocol CNAs from different regions to share first experiences of cooperation at different levels and to discuss future opportunities.
