International Dialogue with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities and Relevant Stakeholders on the Implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Gender Plan of Action

The Conference of Parties, at its fifteenth meeting, adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) in decision 15/4. The Framework sets out an ambitious pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.

Additionally, the Conference of Parties also adopted a Gender Plan of Action to guide, promote and support the gender-responsive implementation of the Framework, which includes applying the gender-responsive in the implementation mechanisms associated with the Framework (decision 15/11). 

Furthermore, the Conference of the Parties, in decision 15/3, requested the Secretariat to organize international dialogues with indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant stakeholders, including women and youth, on progress in the implementation of the KM-GBF and the Gender Plan of Action (2023–2030).

The Secretariat is convening an international dialogue with indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant stakeholders, the first in a series of international dialogues, which will take place with the participation of Parties on 9-10 November 2023 in Geneva Switzerland, prior to the Twelfth meeting of the Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (WG8J-12). 

The International Dialogue will provide a forum to exchange views on key issues of relevance to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Gender Plan of Action (2023-2030).

The Dialogue will be conducted in English, with informal interpretation in French and Spanish

Panel Discussion 1: Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Gender Plan of Action (2023–2030) and new programme of work on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention

This panel aims to present the perspectives of indigenous peoples and local communities, women, and youth regarding approaches to promote the human rights-based approach of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The discussion will also include an examination of lessons learned and gaps in the implementation of the previous Gender Action Plan, as well as opportunities within the current Plan. The panel seeks to identify areas of collaboration among indigenous peoples and local communities, women, and youth to enhance their collective impact on issues of mutual interest.
