New Funding Matches

6 matches in Latin America and South East Asia: Germany’s Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, through the International Climate Initiative, has confirmed €22.8 million in financial support to help countries address climate change and secure livelihoods through the conservation of biological diversity. This financing is consistent with Expressions of Interest made by national governments and their partners to CBD LifeWeb Initiative (www.cbd.int/lifeweb) and supplements the previous support given by the Ministry since 2008 to CBD LifeWeb projects. This support is also an inspiring example of concrete follow-through by Germany on its significant commitments made at the 9th and 10th Conference of the Parties to the CBD to increase its support in the coming years, in particular for needs conveyed by partner countries through the CBD LifeWeb Initiative.

Specifically, this current round of support includes the following projects that are consistent with submissions to CBD LifeWeb Initiative:

€7 million to decrease deforestation and forest degradation in the border area of Central Vietnam and Southern Laos;
€4.4 million for marine and coastal ecosystems and adaptation in the Philippines;
€4 million for protected areas and climate change in Mexico;
€3.5 million to monitor climate-relevant biodiversity in Brazil;
€3.5 million to support marine and coastal biodiversity in Costa Rica;
€0.4 million to strengthen La Paz’ municipal protected area system.

Southern Caucasus (Armenia and Georgia): The Government of Germany, through KfW Development Bank, is investing €5 million in a continuing partnership with the Caucasus Nature Fund and the Governments of Georgia and Armenia. Germany’s financial support is complimented by funding from three new corporate sponsors: financial institutions HSBC Armenia and ProCredit Bank Georgia, as well as Armenian retailer Nina Hovnanian Couture. This builds on a contribution of US$150,000 announced last October from the Bank of Georgia. This new funding will safeguard some of the highest global levels of biodiversity in a temperate climate zone, and contribute to economic development by strengthening the ability of these ecosystems to provide fresh water and other crucial ecosystem services to local communities.

Colombian Amazon: The European Union is providing €3.1 million to the Colombian government, through the Environment and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources including the Energy thematic programme, to support forest conservation and sustainable use activities in protected areas, indigenous reserves and their buffer zones. In turn, this will bolster the subsistence of local communities by strengthening the provision of key ecosystem services, including food and freshwater security, income generation, and cultural and spiritual access especially for indigenous peoples of the Amazon. At a global scale, this funding will contribute to climate change mitigation as a result of greater forest protection.

Update on Financing Roundtables

West Africa:The first Financing Roundtable meeting for West African protected areas will be held in Dakar, Senegal, on 27 May 2010. This roundtable meeting will build on statements made at CBD COP10 by Ministers for the Environment and other senior government officials of Cape Verde, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone and The Gambia, about joining forces to take crucial action to confront their shared challenges in managing their biodiversity and related ecosystem services, with a particular focus on coastal and marine resources. Hosted by the Government of Senegal, and with the support of the Regional Programme of Marine Conservation (PRCM) and the Convention on Biological Diversity’s LifeWeb Initiative, these 7 countries have invited international partners to join them in strengthening cooperation to address shared priorities for sustaining biodiversity, addressing climate change and securing livelihoods through the ecologically representative and effectively managed protected areas systems. For more information, please contact PRMC at prcm@iucn.org and +222.45.29.09.77 or CBD LifeWeb at lifeweb@cbd.int and +1.514.287.8704.
