Activity Details

Title United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020
Mandate
Target 1 - Public awareness
and UNGA RESOLUTION 65/161
Targeted Outputs
1. Communications Collateral
As was demonstrated with the extremely successful International Year of Biodiversity in 2010, the foundation of a widely adopted communications campaign is a clear and consistent set of messages and communications material and channels upon which actors can draw to then transmit to their own audiences. This collateral is extremely important for the launch events of the Decade. The list of collateral is below.

2. Launches at Global, Regional and Subregional level
Setting a robust momentum for the UNDB can be achieved by the convening of well-organised, well-conceived launch events at a variety of levels. The Global Launch event for the UNDB will be held in Japan, and co-organised with the United Nations University in December 2011.

3. Regional launches:
Regional launches are another important component, to ensure that the UNDB truly becomes a global campaign. Each Regional Launch should seek to reach out to the general public and other stakeholders not usually associated with the CBD. They include the following components:
(a) A high-level segment, featuring speeches by heads of state and ministers
(b) A civil society component, featuring the participation of large NGOs involved in sustainable development
(c) A media briefing component, including training on biodiversity issues.
It is suggested that Regional Launches be organised in partnership with Nations Governments, Regional Organizations, United Nations Information Centres, UNEP Regional Offices and other relevant agencies. The Launches should take place starting in May 2011 The following are suggested locations for the regional launches
i. Asia - India (financially supported)
ii. Africa - Ethiopia (financially supported)
iii. Europe - France UNESCO (funding not required)
iv. North America - United States (funding not required)
v. South America and the Caribbean - Costa Rica (funding not required)

4. Subregional launches will take place at NBSAP workshops, which are scheduled throughout 2011. These launches will be of a smaller scale, and will include a high-level event at the opening of the workshop, a media briefing component with local journalists, and training on the distribution of UNDB collateral. The funds required to hold these activities will come from the budgets for the NBSAP workshops.
