Targeted Outputs
- Official launching and programme development of Sustainable Ocean Initiative, as a long-term capacity building initiatives for PoW on marine and coastal biodiversity in collaboration with Japan Ministry of Environment and UNU-IAS-Kanazawa
- CBD Expert Workshop on MPA
- CBD Expert Workshop on Sustainable Fishery
- SOI Pilot Training Workshops on marine protected areas and sustainable fishery
Specific Activities
(1) SOI programme launching and programme development workshop
- Time/Venue: August 2011, Kanazawa/Japan
- Operational Modality : Programme development meeting to be co-organized and hosted by UNU-IAS-Kanazawa and Japan MOE
- Japan Fund Allocation: $ 40,000 (meeting, including the travel of participants and SCBD staff)
- Co-financing by UNU-IAS-Kanazawa: $ 30,000 (to be confirmed)
- Other collaborators: Marine experts in Japan (network of Satoumi) such as Tokyo University, Kyoto University, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature of Japan, Kyushu University, etc, Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative, TNC

(2) CBD Expert workshop on MPA
- Time/Venue : September 2011, Kanazawa/Japan
- Operational Modality: expert workshop to be convened by CBD Secretariat
- Japan Fund Allocation : $ 72,000 (meeting, including the travel of participants and SCBD Staff)
- Co-financing by French MPA Agency ($ 27,000), Brazil ($ 20,000 to be confirmed)
- Other collaborators : FAO, UNDOALOS, WCPA, TNC

(3) SOI Training workshop on MPA (back to back with CBD MPA Expert Workshop)
- Time/Venue : September 2011, Kanazawa/Japan
- Operational Modality : a training workshop co-organized and hosted by UNU-IAS-Kanazawa and Japan MOE
- Japan Fund Allocation: $ 40,000 (meeting, including the travel of participants and SCBD Staff)
- Other collaborators : FAO, UNDOALOS, WCPA, TNC

(4) CBD-FAO-UNEP-IUCN Joint expert meeting on sustainable fishery
- Time/Venue: October 2011, Seoul/RO Korea (to be confirmed)
- Operational Modality : expert meeting to be convened by CBD Secretariat in collaboration with UNEP and FAO, and hosted by Korea MAFF; Background study for joint expert meeting on sustainable fishery ($ 30,000, to be co-financed by UNEP)
- Japan Fund Allocation: $ 55,000 (meeting, including the travel of participants and SCBD staff)
- Co-financing by UNEP ($ 30,000 to be confirmed), FAO ($ 30,000 to be confirmed), RO Korea ($ 50,000 to be confirmed)
- Other collaborators : IUCN-FEG-CEM, RFMOs
