Date and Time
22 February 2007 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Third meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group of Legal and Technical Experts on Liability and Redress in the context of Protocol

The Canadian cases of Monsanto v. Schmeiser and Hoffman v. Monsanto are some of the first to address the rights and responsibilities that biotechnology companies have in relation to genetically modified organisms. This side event will include presentations on the facts and findings in the two cases, an analysis of the implications of the courts' rulings, a juxtaposition of intellectual property rights and tort responsibilities, and consideration of how these cases relate to the liability and redress negotiations of the Biosafety Protocol.
