Side Event
Conservation and Poverty Principles and the New CBD Strategic Plan: A Consultation Meeting
Organizer
Steering Group on Linking Conservation & Poverty
Date and Time
19 February 2008 13:15 - 14:45
The process “Linking Biodiversity Conservation and Poverty Reduction” strives to enhance positive and reduce negative impacts of biodiversity conservation on pov-erty, relevant to the CBD strategic plan and progress towards the 2010 target and the Millennium Development Goals. It brings together different players that are involved with conservation activities to encourage better linkages between conservation and poverty reduction and avoidance. The process aims to encourage relevant players to carry out conservation activities in a way that contributes to poverty reduction at the local level, and at the very minimum avoid increasing poverty. To achieve this, it is intended to jointly develop principles and guidance, based on a broad involvement from conservation and development organizations and local and indigenous people who are impacted by conservation. It is further planned to integrate these efforts with related policy processes and frameworks to further its recognition and to generate broad commitment. In this context the Convention on Biological Diversity is thereby considered to be one of the most relevant and important institutions. The side event, which is envisaged as a consultation meeting introduces the aims and objectives of the initiative, its potential and the steps so far planned and invites wider participation in its further development.
